"Mental Health Is Spiritual"- Genevieve Nnaji Says, Advises On How To Deal With It

Daddy Freeze wrote:

“My thoughts though……

After studying psychiatry
and spirituality for decades you make this deduction? I say this all the time, because a celebrity has a huge following doesn’t necessarily
make them an authority on issues. If she said it was both spiritual and physical I’d agree that that’s her opinion.

However, to categorically state that it’s
more spiritual than physical is the reason why churches are filled with pastors trying to cure madness with speaking in tongues, olive oil and prayers, instead of sending
people for proper psychiatric evaluation
and treatment.

God has already sorted out our mental health issues, that’s why we have hospitals!

“I humbly disagree and here are my reasons.

A follower of Daddy Freeze @ayoshonaiya also commented:

This is the reason why mental illness goes untreated for millions of people in Nigeria. Concluding that something is “spiritual” actually makes the matter worse because patients are now taken from Church to Church, looking for a cure, and that process itself can be as traumatic as what originally started the mental health issues. That one misleading notion that you can always pray something away has caused a lot of problems for us as a people. I am sure Genevieve means well, and she’s just affirming her faith, but mental illness is neither spiritual or physical, it’s MENTAL! And the only proven way to manage it is by therapy and medication, and a change of lifestyle.”
