“I will be unable to join the All Progressive Party” — Akwa Ibom Commissioner Ememobong Resigns Over Governor Umo Eno’s Defection From PDP to APC

In a bold and principled move, Dr. Ini Ememobong, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Seaport has stepped down from his position following Governor Umo Eno’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Governor Eno made the switch official on June 6, 2025, inviting his cabinet members to follow suit or resign. Ememobong, known for his strong ideological stance, chose resignation, citing his unwillingness to abandon his PDP roots.

“You have directed that any appointee who is unwilling to accompany you to switch from the People’s Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress should resign. Ipso facto, based on my personal conviction, I will be unable to join the All Progressives Congress,”

he wrote in his resignation letter.
“I hereby most respectfully tender my resignation as Honourable Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port and a member of the State Executive Council.”
Appreciating the opportunity to serve, he added:
“I write to most sincerely appreciate the confidence and opportunity you offered me… The experience garnered within this period has been very enlightening.”
His decision has sparked statewide debate, with many praising his resolve to stay true to his beliefs.
