Peter Okoye Declares Himself Only Certified Musician in Okoye Family, Says Critics Fuelled P-Square’s Breakup

Nigerian singer Peter Okoye, popularly known as Mr P and one half of the now-defunct music duo P-Square, has boldly asserted that he remains the only certified musician in the Okoye family—despite constant public comparisons with his twin brother and former bandmate, Paul Okoye.

While performing at the recent AY Live event, Mr P addressed critics who have consistently downplayed his talent over the years. He explained that the persistent comparisons were one of the major reasons behind the duo’s split.

“I have sang and danced but they told you I am talentless. I will prove myself today,” he told the audience.

He went on to claim that the constant narrative favouring his brother’s talent eventually caused a strain in their working relationship.

“The reason P-Square slipt was because two brothers were doing their thing and some fans started saying one was more talented than the other and it got into his head and he started misbehaving,” he said.

In a further effort to correct misconceptions, Mr P revealed he is the only member of his family with formal music training.

“They lied to you. In the whole of Okoye’s family, I’m the only one with music certificate. I read music. But they lied to you. I know the liars but let’s leave it,” he said.

To reinforce his point, he delivered a performance that showcased his range—singing, dancing, and playing both the piano and guitar on stage.

“I have sang, danced and played the piano and the guitar, is it easy?” he asked rhetorically.

For Mr P, the performance served not only as entertainment but also as a personal statement, reclaiming his space in the music industry and challenging the long-standing narrative that has followed him since the P-Square split.
