‘The Respect Is Long Overdue’: Skepta Demands Recognition for UK Artists

British rap star Skepta has shared his thoughts on the long-standing debate between UK and US rappers, asserting that British artists have been underrated for too long.

Speaking in an interview with Link UP TV, Skepta expressed his frustration over the lack of recognition UK rappers receive from their American counterparts, stating that the call for respect is long overdue.

“My challenge to US rappers was me saying it is time to get the respect we [UK rappers] deserve. It wasn’t from a place of we are going to annihilate them [US rappers] even though I feel that it is definitely possible. It is more of we want the respect,” Skepta said.

The rapper’s remarks have reignited discussions around the UK vs US rap scene, further echoing Canadian superstar Drake’s recent endorsement of British rap.

Drake, while performing at the Wireless Festival in London on Saturday, declared that UK rappers are the best in the game — a statement that aligns with Skepta’s stance and adds weight to the growing international recognition of the UK hip-hop scene.
