The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away, bringing an end to his brief tenure as the 43rd monarch of the ancient city.
Sources confirmed that the revered royal died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025 — just two days after marking his 90th birthday. His transition comes less than a year after his coronation.

Oba Olakulehin was officially crowned as Olubadan on July 12, 2024, after receiving the staff of office from the Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde. His reign, though short, was marked by reflection on tradition and continuity in Ibadan’s royal lineage.
Born on July 5, 1935, the late monarch had a long-standing history of leadership within the city’s traditional hierarchy. His path to the throne followed years of dedicated service to the Ibadan chieftaincy structure.
His death has plunged the city into mourning, with tributes expected to pour in from traditional institutions and political leaders across the nation.
Further announcements regarding burial arrangements and official mourning protocols are expected to be released by the Ibadan Traditional Council in the coming days.
