The Chief of Defence staff, General Lucky Irabor during an interview with Premium times on Sunday claimed that the rumour spreading around concerning the rescue of some Chibok girls by the Nigerian troop is not true.
In 2014, about 270 school girls from Chibok community in Borno State were kidnapped. While some of the girls managed to escape, others spent over two years with their abductors before the Nigerian government negotiated their release.Recently, a news broke out about the escape of some girls and their rescue by the Nigerian troop.
International Media like BBC and CNN claimed they spoke with the father of Halima, one of the rescued school girl. He said his daughter could not recognize him.
During the Sunday interview with Premium times, when asked if the news was authentic, the chief of defence staff said no Chibok girl was rescued.
“What we know is that we do not have any of the Chibok schoolgirls in our custody. If they’re not with us what do you want us to confirm to you?
“Yes, we desire to rescue the rest of the Chibok girls and any other person behind the lines…gladly. If our operations have helped those that have been alleged to have escaped I think we are glad. We hope to strengthen the efforts that we are putting now to free the rest that are behind lines.”
