Canadian rap superstar, Drake, has sparked conversation in the global music scene after boldly declaring that UK rappers are lyrically superior to their counterparts around the world, including in his home country.
The multi-award-winning artist made the remark during his headline performance at the Wireless Festival in London on Saturday night, where he paused his set to pay tribute to the British rap scene.
Midway into his electrifying performance, Drake expressed deep admiration for UK rappers, stating that their lyrical prowess stands unmatched globally.
“When I talk about my love for London and London rappers — the best lyricists in the world. Mark my words. I don’t care about what anybody says, nobody can out-rap London. Nobody,” he declared to the cheering crowd.
He went further to clarify that his statement was not intended to belittle other regions, but to emphasize how highly he rates the British rap industry.
“No disrespect to America, no disrespect to my country, but nobody in the world can out-rap London rappers. This is the best, highest level. And this is what I inspires to be,” he added.
Drake’s comments have since gone viral on social media, sparking both support and debate among fans and artists from various parts of the world, particularly in the US and UK. Many hailed his statement as a nod to the rising global influence of UK hip-hop and grime artists, while others challenged the notion, defending American rap’s long-standing dominance.
The rapper, who has consistently collaborated with UK artists and often incorporates British slang and drill influences in his music, has long been vocal about his appreciation for the London music scene. His latest remarks only solidify his connection to the UK rap movement.
Drake’s endorsement of British talent comes at a time when UK rappers are gaining increasing recognition on international platforms, with artists like Dave, Central Cee, Stormzy, and Skepta enjoying global followings.
While his comments have stirred debate, they also shine a spotlight on the lyrical depth and storytelling found within the UK rap scene — one that continues to grow and redefine itself on the world stage.
