At the 51st American Music Awards held on May 26, 2025, in Las Vegas, something unexpected happened. When legendary singer Janet Jackson took the stage to receive the prestigious Icon Award, her words shocked many.
Rather than bask in the glory, the 58-year-old superstar humbly said, “I don’t consider myself to be an icon.”
Janet, known for timeless hits like That’s The Way Love Goes, revealed that neither she nor her famous siblings, including the late Michael Jackson, ever aimed for stardom. Their hearts, she said, were simply set on the music.
“We didn’t grow up dreaming of fame,” Janet explained. “We just loved music, dancing, and singing. Fame came as a result of passion, discipline, and consistency.”
Her words painted a picture of a family grounded in purpose rather than public attention. From the Jackson 5 to her own solo journey, the Jackson legacy has been built on more than fame, it’s been built on love for the craft.
It’s rare to hear a global star speak so modestly. But that’s Janet graceful, talented, and refreshingly real.
