Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari was laid to rest on Tuesday in the garden of his Daura residence in Katsina State, following a state funeral attended by top government officials and dignitaries.

The late president, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, in a London hospital after a long illness, was buried in a spot within his compound where he often sat during his lifetime.

Funeral prayers were held at a helipad near his home, after which military pallbearers transported his body — draped in the Nigerian flag — to the burial site. A military gun salute was fired as a final honour to the former commander-in-chief.

Chief of Defence Staff, General Chris Musa, delivered a tribute by the graveside before the interment.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led a delegation of high-profile mourners, including Vice-President Kashim Shettima, former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, and Niger Republic’s Prime Minister, Ali Lamine Zeine.

Earlier in the day, Tinubu received Buhari’s remains at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua International Airport in Katsina. He arrived from Abuja at 1:42 p.m. and inspected a guard of honour. The Nigerian Air Force aircraft carrying Buhari’s remains landed at 1:51 p.m.

Buhari served as Nigeria’s president from 2015 to 2023, and previously as a military head of state in the 1980s. His legacy continues to stir reflection across the nation.
