“A Traditional Ruler Must Be Selected by the Deity, Not Government” — Yul Edochie Warns Ndi Igbo

Nollywood actor and filmmaker Yul Edochie has shared a passionate message to the Igbo community, calling for a return to the original method of selecting traditional rulers.
In a post on his Instagram page, Yul criticized the growing neglect of cultural values, stating that the position of a traditional ruler should not be influenced by politics or government structures.
“A traditional ruler must be selected traditionally, not by election or the government,” he said.
He explained that in the past, leaders were chosen by the deity of the land, a spiritual process he believes should never have been abandoned. According to him, the adoption of foreign systems has done more harm than good.
“We have now embraced too many of the white man’s ways and destroyed our society with it. That’s why there’s so much crime in our communities today,” he wrote.
Yul stressed that traditional leadership carries spiritual weight, noting that rulers are meant to take sacred oaths before the deity to uphold truth and justice.
“A traditional ruler must be selected by the deity of the land. Then he will swear before the deity to uphold truth, unity and peace, and shun evil. Any day he goes against the oath, the deity will strike him down,” he declared.
“With that, he will never support evil, and he’ll fight evil with all his might,” the actor added.
He ended his message with a call for Ndi Igbo to retrace their steps and revive the traditional values that once held their communities together.
