The federal government has played down recent security concerns instigated by the United States Embassy, declaring that Abuja remains one of the safest capitals in the world.

In a statement on Monday, Mohammed Idris, Minister of Information and National Orientation, said the government acknowledges the right of foreign embassies to issue travel advisories to their citizens but emphasized there is no specific threat in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This comes after the U.S. embassy advised its citizens to avoid government and military facilities in Abuja, warning them to remain vigilant, steer clear of large gatherings, and some other daily activities for safety.

Responding, Idris said Nigeria’s security and intelligence agencies are working together to safeguard lives and property, particularly in the FCT. He clarified that the country’s security architecture is zealous and has recorded notable successes in preventing and offsetting threats.

“The U.S. advisory seems to stem from general global developments and not from any specific risk within Nigeria,” he stated.

He assured the public, foreign missions, investors, etc, that there is no cause for alarm, stating the government’s commitment to ensuring security in Abuja.

Idris urged residents to go about their activities without fear but to remain watchful and report any suspicious activity to the relevant authorities.
