At a rare moment of candor, multi-award-winning Nigerian actress Mercy Aigbe took away the glamour to reveal the bare truth of being a single mother. On the latest episode of Real Talk with Kike, Mercy opened up, revealing the financial, mental, and psychological exhaustion single-handed parenting has saddled her with.
“Draining,” she admitted. “I don’t wish single motherhood on anyone.”
A world away from movie sets and red carpets, Mercy’s reality has been a daily struggle to be both father and mother — to care for, to defend, to discipline, and to pray unceasingly. Her voice shook with emotion as she spoke of being tough with her children, not because she is cruel, but because she is afraid of failing them.
She said her worst times were based on fear of judgment that people would mock her children because they were being raised by a single mom. “I didn’t want people to say, ‘What do you expect? A single mother raised them,'” she said.
But despite it all, she calls single mothers “heroes,” tipping her hat to their grit while admitting it left her exhausted and depleted. Despite the outcry from the public regarding her personal life, Mercy’s honest revelations strike a chord in many, revealing the everyday sacrifices of single mothers in silence.
