In a candid conversation with the founder of House of Binty, a rising skincare and aphrodisiac brand, Mrs. Fatima Binta Aliyu opens up about her entrepreneurial journey, the myths surrounding Kayamata, and what it truly means to build a beauty business in Nigeria.

With a strong focus on authenticity, Binta is empowering women to embrace wellness—both inside and out.

What inspired you to start your skincare brand?

“In 2017, I moved to Lagos. Coming from another region, I noticed my skin was very sensitive to products. I tried using a high-end skincare brand, and while it worked for a while, I eventually started reacting to it—breakouts, rashes, and even face masks that made things worse.

One day, a colleague asked me why I was still breaking out despite using such expensive products. That really struck me. I realized that there must be many women in Nigeria and beyond who are facing similar issues and in need of natural products tailored to their skin type.

That was the turning point. I decided to go learn how to make skincare products myself—safe, natural ones for every woman. That’s how House of Binty was born.”

There’s a lot of misconception about Kayamata and similar products. Can you help us understand what they really are, and how safe they are for consumers?

“Yes, there’s a huge misconception. In this part of the world, many women don’t speak openly about their struggles. In public, they pretend everything is okay. But in private, I get so many messages—women complaining about low libido, vaginal dryness, feeling loose after childbirth, or just not enjoying intimacy anymore.

Because of these repeated questions, I decided to do my own research. Some of these products are ingested, while others are used externally like lubricants. That’s why safety is important. I even traveled to Morocco, a place known for the best aphrodisiacs, to learn from certified experts.

Let me be clear—Kayamata is not juju. Someone once commented under my post thinking it was fetish, and another woman replied saying, ‘No, it’s not. Kaya means “package” and Mata means “wife.” It’s simply a gift pack for brides to take to their husband’s house. These are natural supplements and enhancements, just like vitamins, made to improve a woman’s sexual health and confidence.”

People often say the skincare market is saturated. What’s your take?

“No market is saturated. It’s about your strategy and your ability to solve real problems. If your product is effective, people will look for you.

And if you don’t have money to start, there are still ways. I started with my alawee (NYSC allowance). You can sell for others, take permission from vendors, snap their products, post them online, and do dropshipping. Once you get orders, buy the product, deliver it, and keep your profit. It’s about creativity, thinking fast, and being proactive.”

If you could speak to your younger self, what would you say?

“I would give kudos to myself. Coming from a North Central state, I had never left home until NYSC. But once I went out, I became productive. Everything I have today, I worked for. I’ll give myself a 90, and the remaining 10 percent is what I’m still working to achieve.”

House of Binty continues to grow, driven by Binta’s commitment to real solutions, honest conversations, and the empowerment of women. From skincare to sexual wellness, she’s changing the narrative—one product at a time.
