U.S. President, Donald Trump says Elon Musk would go broke and return to South Africa without US government subsidies for his businesses.

Trump’s tweet comes as Elon Musk stepped up his attacks on his sweeping tax and spending bill.

Musk spent at least $250m (£182m) supporting Mr Trump in his presidential campaign and then led the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Trump has suggested that DOGE look at subsidies for Musk’s companies to save money.

In response to Trump’s post, Musk, on his own social media platform X, said “I am literally saying CUT IT ALL. Now.”

Elon Musk vows to make sure every member of Congress who campaigned on reducing gov spending but voted for the ‘Big, Beautiful Bill,’ loses their primary in 2026.

“They will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth.”
