At the US Inauguration of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as President and Vice-president yesterday, American poet, Amanda Gorman impressed billions of viewers all over the world after delivering an inspiring poetry “The hill we climb”.

 

Here are 12 things you need to know about Amanda Gorman.

 

 

1. Amanda Gorman,is an American poet from Los Angeles, California.

2. Born in 1998 and raised up in Los Angeles.
She developed a penchant for poetry after hearing her teacher read”Dandelion Wine” by Bradbury.In spite of her speech impediment,Gorman kept on writing.

 

 

3. At 14,she joined ‘WriteGirl’ a non profit organization in Los Angeles that promotes creativity and self expression to empower girls, attending their monthly creative writing workshop and writing one on one with mentors.

 

 

4. At 16,Gorman was named the first ever Los Angeles Youth Poet Laureate.

5. After being inspired by a speech Malala Yousafzai,a Pakistani activist and noble prize laureate gave in 2013,Gorman became a youth delegate for the United Nations.

6. In 2014-She was named the inaugural Los Angeles Youth Poet Laureate.

7. In 2015- She published”the one for whom food is not enough” which became her first poetry collection.

8. In 2017-She became the first ever National Youth Poet Laureate,then,she was 19 and a sophomore at Harvard University.

 

9. Amanda Gorman who recently graduated Cum Laude from Harvard University has two books that will be published soon with Penguin Random House: A children’s book called “Change sings” and a poetry.

 

10. On the 6th of January, on the night of the Capitol Hill invasion,Gorman wrote a poem which was applauded by the likes of TV star Oprah Winfrey and Hillary Clinton.

 

11. She became the youngest poet to feature in the US Presidential inauguration where she recited her recent poetry “The Hill we climb”.

 

12. She has announced her intention to run for the United States Presidential Election in 2036.
