The 28th edition of the CAF Awards to celebrate the best African footballers and officials was held last night at the Albatross Citadel Sahl Hasheesh Resort in Hurghada, Egypt.

 

The awards saw Sadio Mane and Asisat Oshoala of Nigeria crowned the African Player of the Year and African Women’s player of the year for 2019.

 

Sadio Mane of Senegal who was the only player present of the nominated Men’s player at the ceremony was crowned the African Player of the year with 477 votes, while his Liverpool teammate Mohammed Salah polled 325 votes and Algerian Riyad Mahrez 267 votes.

The Senegalese forward was really happy for his victory and thanked his family and the people of Senegal for his success:

 

“To be honest I would prefer to be playing football than speaking in front of so many people. “I’m really happy and really proud at the same time.

 

“I would like to thank my family, especially my uncle who is here today. It is a big day for me and I would love to thank all the Senegalese people who have been voting for me. I’m from a very small village called Bambali and I’m sure they are all watching me tonight” said Mane when he received the award.

 

Asisat Oshoala of Nigeria, who also plays for Barcelona came out victorious as the African female player of the year 2019, beating Ajara Nchout of Cameron and Thembi Kgatiana of South Africa.

This is the fourth time Oshoala has won this award equaling fellow Nigerian Perpertua Nkwocha.
Achraf Hakimi of Morocco won the award for best youth African player of the year defeating Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze.

African Women’s Player of the Year: Asisat Oshoala (Nigeria & Barcelona)

African Player of the Year: Sadio Mane (Senegal & Liverpool)

 

 

 

In other news, Manchester city defeated Manchester United in the first leg of the Carabao Cup Semi finals in Old Trafford, with Bernardo Silva scoring a stunning goal from outside the box. The second leg will be played at the Etihad Stadium on the 29th of January.
